Hey There,

Graduates Over Guns was born via, a three way phone call amongst educators, Umi Brooks, Celeste Sulaiman, and Ashley Coleman, discussing the need to create an outdoor event to shift the narrative of violence plaguing communities and edify academic excellence. The thought quickly escalated into action.  We knew visual perspective was needed to create awareness and impact; Graduates Over Guns highlights graduates via an annual walk, where students wear their cap and gown and walk the Southside community of Englewood.

OUR STORY

We are passionate educators, setting forth endless opportunities to uplift students.  Since starting in 2015, Graduates Over Guns has grown tremendously and we are proud to say as of 2019, a total of 300 graduates, 200 school staff, 60 community partners, and 35 miles have been marched in the streets of Englewood to celebrate Graduates Over Guns. Graduates Over Guns is providing a pipeline via community programming to increase the academic and retention gap of students across Chicago's SouthSide neighborhoods . Please join us in a vested interest as we take charge and ensure the success of the next generation.  We look forward to gain more collaborative partnerships and opportunities to assist students on the path of safety and success.
